A despondent turban wearing resident in her fur-trimmed overcoat wanders past boarded up shop windows in New Cross. The Lewisham riots took place on 13 August. 500 members of the National Front marched from New Cross to Lewisham. Various counter-demonstrations led to violent clashes between the two main groups and between the anti-NF demonstrators and police. 214 people were arrested for obstructing the police, threatening behaviour, assault, possession of an offensive weapon and throwing missiles
