Jankyn Smyth Cake and Ale ceremony at the Guildhall Bury St Edmunds Suffolk 2015. Jankyn Smyth ( died 1491 seen here in a portrait) his original bequest was to provide funds with which the citizens of the town could pay the tax due to each new Abbot of Bury St Edmunds upon his election. The endowment has been enlarged and altered, the Trust has met other needs, so as to provide for the "common profit and benefit of the inhabitants of Bury St Edmunds". <br />
Over the centuries this has included the setting up of the Feoffment School, the appointment of a town surgeon who looked after the sick until the establishment of the West Suffolk Hospital. Orphans were cared for and the young found apprenticeships. And today many others benefit from the Guildhall Feoffemnt Trust. There are over 30 residents of the Guildhall Feoffment Almshouses in Bury St Edmunds, and they along with guests and trustees celebrate the towns great benefactor Jankyn Smyth each June.
