IRA hunger striker Francis Hughes funeral in Bellaghy, in County Londonderry, May 1981. Hughes was the second person, after Bobby Sands, to die in May 1981 during a hunger strike at the Maze (Long Kesh) prison. Following his capture in February 1980, Hughes was tried for, and found guilty of, the murder of one British Army soldier and the wounding of another in the incident which led to his capture, as well as a series of gun and bomb attacks over a six-year period. He was sentenced to a total of 83 years in prison.
