The Peoples Republic of China. Shanghai. 2000. The Chinese flag flies on National Day from hundreds of buildings all over Shanghai. It was a Shanghai resident, Zeng Liangsong, who produced the winning design for Chinas national flag in a competition in 1949. The large star represents the Communist Party and the four smaller stars are the four classes as originally defined by Mao Zedung: workers, peasants, petty bourgeoisie and patriotic capitalists. Mr Zheng was still living in Shanghai in 2000, aged 83.
