The garden gnome was first introduced by Sir Charles Isham to his family estate in Northamptonshire in 1847. These small humanoid creatures and other friends have spread slowly but uninterruptedly over the last 150 years. Domesticated they survive best in family groups. However from time to time there have been campaigns by do-gooders to wild them once more.
