Longbridge, Birmingham, England 20 February 1980. At Crofton Park, British Leyland car factory workers vote with a sea of hands and overwhelmingly defeat by 14,000 to just 600 the motion of support for Derek ‘Red Robbo’ Robinson a union leader at British Leyland who was credited with causing 523 strikes between 1978 and 1979. Mrs Thatcher had called him a ‘notorious agitator’, the age of ‘Red Robbo’ as a political and industrial force was over.
