Crofton Park Birmingham Austin car factory workers
Longbridge, Birmingham, England 20 February 1980. At Crofton Park, British Leyland car factory workers vote overwhelmingly and defeat by 14,000 to just 600 the motion of support for Derek ‘Red Robbo’ Robinson a union leader at British Leyland who was credited with causing 523 strikes between 1978 and 1979. Mrs Thatcher had called him a ‘notorious agitator’, the age of ‘Red Robbo’ as a political and industrial force was over.
