EBERNOE HORN FAIR WEST SUSSEX

Ebernoe, West Sussex, England 25th July 2015.  Ebernoe Horn Fair their annual cricket match held on Ebernoe Common and Nature Reserve. The Horns from the lamb roasted for the players lunch are presented to the player from the winning side who scores the most runs. Followed by the singing of the Horn Fair Song.<br />

The present fair is thought to have grown from  an annual farmers sheep sale that in time became a sheep fair. Its always played on St James Day, in the church calendar 25 July, so in times long past a religious holiday and rare time off work. In 1864 a cricket match was played between Ebernoe and Plaistow villages. A whole sheep was spit roasted and fed to the players. The horns were then given to the batsman who scored the most runs on the winning side. A trophy still much coveted to this day.
