ISLE OF MAN 1970s

Castletown, The Isle of Man circa July 1978. Superintendent Alan Killip, the Isle of Man's highest ranking police officer holding a birch at Castle Rushen.  The birch was still used for corporal punishment on the Isle of Man during the 1970s. Administered by the police to petty offenders. The European Court of Human Rights condemned the practice of corporal punishment using birch branches. The vast majority of the population of the Isle of Man voted to maintain this form of punishment.
