Chiswick Women's Aid, Richmond, London, England circa November 1975. Chiswick Women’s Aid, a refuge from domestic violence for battered women was founded by Erin Pizzey in 1971. Daily morning  House Meeting were held where mutual problems were discussed. Some times husbands and or partners were able to attend. In the 1970’s unofficially it was estimated that as many as 25 thousand families in Britain were subject to violence. No-one talked about domestic abuse, what went on behind closed doors was considered private and no-one else’s business.
