The Nether Stowey Female Friendly Society; the Womens Walk on Club Day to the grave at St Marys Church of their founder, local businessman and friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Tom Poole. He realised in 1806 that women needed help in times of sickness, in childbirth, in widowhood, and in old age. Every member subscribed according to her means, and thrift and self-help were encouraged. The Nether Stowey Female Friendly Society; the Womens Walk on Club Day to the grave at St Marys Church of their founder, local businessman and friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Tom Poole. He realised in 1806 that women needed help in times of sickness, in childbirth, in widowhood, and in old age. Every member subscribed according to her means, and thrift and self-help were encouraged. The Society thrived and two hundred years later ladies and girls of the village celebrate all he did for their community. After the church service the procession walks back to the Village Hall, lead by a girl carrying a banner which reads "Foresight and Union linked by Christian Love Helped by the Good Below and Heaven Above."
