NUNS 1980S ENGLAND

Much Birch, Herefordshire, England circa 1989. Colettine Poor Clares are an enclosed Catholic order that observe night rising, perpetual fast and the observance of papal enclosure. They go barefoot as a sign of Gospel poverty and in witness to the transcendence of God. Sister Colette reads her bible in her cell. A soft doorstop hangs around the handle to prevent it shutting noisily. On the bed she has placed a crucifix, the image of Christ on the door is positioned at eye level, which she would look at before pulling back the bed covers at night.
