OLD LADIES OF CASTLE RISING NORFOLK UK

Castle Rising, Norfolk, England 24th February 2007. The Old Ladies of Castle Rising. The Almeshouses - The Hospital of the Holy and Undivided Trinity in Castle Rising was founded by Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton and were built between 1609 and 1614. Henry Howard’s will established a charity which provided sheltered accommodation for thirteen poor spinsters or widows from Castle Rising Parish, aged 50 or over, one of whom was their governess. On Founders Day they wear their traditional scarlet cloakes and pointed black hats to attend a memorial service in the ‘Hospital’ chapel. Those residents taking part gather prior to the service in the central courtyard of the 'Hospital'.
