The Almshouses - The Hospital of the Holy and Undivided Trinity in Castle Rising was founded by Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton and were built between 1609 and 1614. Henry Howard’s Will established a charity which provided sheltered accommodation for thirteen poor spinsters or widows from Castle Rising Parish, aged 50 or over, one of whom was their governess. On Founders Day each year the residents wear their traditional scarlet cloaks and pointed black hats to attend a memorial service in the ‘Hospital’ chapel. Gathering prior to the service in the central courtyard of the Hospital, the governess checks that everyone looks in order.
