OPIUM DRUG ADDICTION HILL TRIBAL VILLAGES THAILAND 1990s

Akha Hill Tribe indigenous people of Northern Thailand circa 1995. An Akha village in the mountains of Northern Thailand. Two carved wood ancestor figures of a man and woman, both smoking a pipe. These are part of the Spirit Gate, the entrance to an Akha village which marks the division between the inside of the village, the domain of man and domesticated animals and the outside, the realm of spirits and wildlife. The gates function to ward off evil spirits and to entice favourable ones.
