Padley Martyrs. Grindleford, Derbyshire, England 13th July 2008. On the 12th July 1588, two catholic priests Nicholas Garlick a son of a Yeoman and Robert Ludlam the son of a farmer were discovered at Padley Hall along with members of the Fitzherbert family all were arrested. Both men had trained in France to become priests. On the 12th July 1588, two catholic priests Nicholas Garlick a son of a Yeoman and Robert Ludlam the son of a farmer were discovered at Padley Hall along with members of the Fitzherbert family all were arrested. Both men had trained in France to become priests. At the time to be a catholic priest, ordained abroad was deemed treason; the two were tried and found guilty, two weeks later, they were hanged, drawn and quartered in Derby. They became known as the Padley Martyrs. The pilgrimage, a short walk from Grindleford train station, followed by mass at the chapel commemorates these brave men. The mass amongst the ruins of Padley Hall and Padley Chapel.
