Ripon Hornblower, Brian Waines, the Wakeman sounds the ancient Charter horn once at each corner of the market square obelisks at 9.00 pm every night of the year. The custom of ‘Setting the Watch' has been carried out for 1128 years. It is the longest ongoing unbroken daily ceremony in the world. <br />
In 1974, the Horn Blower was paid £1-00 per night plus 14p travelling expenses. <br />
