Prairie farming South Downs, Kent circa June 1992. Farmers remove traditional and often ancient hedgerows to create huge open hedges-less fields. This is clearly good for farming giving the farmer a sense of scale. One huge field rather than many small field that are perhaps difficult to manage. However the loss of hedgerows has been identified as a factor in the decline of many plant and animal species traditionally associated with farmland.
