Cowes, Isle of Wight, England circa August 1985. Cowes Sailing Regatta, all races are started when the small cannons are fired at five, two and one minute intervals and then flags come down. Different flags are used to indicate to competitors racing information.  The cannon in front of Royal Yacht Squadron are from Royal Adelaide one of King William IV's yachts and the race officer who fires them is known as the “gunner".
