Port Talbot in the 1930s was known as Treasure Island, due to high wages and high employment; by the late 1980’s it was renamed by some as Gyro City. British Steel Corporation a nationalised industry was a loss making major employer in the town. The Conservative governments cuts to subsidies were intended to create profitability.
