China 1990s daily life children One child government policy
China 1990s Chinese family teenagers inside family home Liufu village Anhui Province watching TV. 1998 Rural community family life.
This is the living room and bedroom and where guests are taken. There were several TV sets in this small family home. The father was a grain merchant, but had almost nothing to sell. The mother had separated from the family and lived in another house in the village. She was a school teacher. There were four daughters two of whom spoke English. There was no toilet or washroom bathroom and that was all done behind a screen in the back garden - yard. I would say they were well off and very hospitable. Cakes on right were brought out for me. Two sisters in this image speak good English but were unemployed one who I met was looking for work in Beijing, and took me back to meet her family. They said the one child policy was not strictly enforced, but they were unusual and had had all girls! This was 1998.
